The purpose of the Specialist is to conduct independent laboratory research under the guidance of the PI and other laboratory members within the Feng lab at UCSF. Research in the Feng Laboratory focuses on identifying molecular drivers of prostate cancer pathogenesis, understanding the mechanisms by which these molecular drivers contribute to disease progression, and developing novel therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer. Research studies conducted by the Specialist require both in vitro and in vivo methodologies.

Job Responsibilities:

• Culturing primary human tissue and established human cancer cell lines
• Performing gene transfer studies using Lentiviral infection of human cell cultures
• Performing knock-down experiments using shRNA lentiviral infection and CRISPR-based techniques
• Using basic molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, DNA and RNA isolation, and protein expression analysis using western blot techniques
• Managing mouse colony, including setting up breeding, weaning and PCR genotyping
• Conducting xenograft studies, using animal irradiator and delivering drugs by oral gavage

Required qualifications:

• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 4 years of research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Mammalian cell culture techniques.
• Basic molecular biological techniques including DNA cloning, DNA or RNA extraction.

Preferred qualifications:

• Culturing primary human tissue and established human cancer cell lines.
• Performing gene transfer studies using Lentiviral infection of human cell cultures.
• Performing knock-down experiments using shRNA lentiviral infection and CRISPR-based techniques.
• Molecular cloning, DNA and RNA isolation, and protein expression analysis using western blot techniques.
• Managing mouse colony, including setting up breeding, weaning and PCR genotyping.
• Post-graduate training in field.
• Independent specialized research.
• Management experience.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
