Position description

Junior Specialist position available at the UCSF Department of Laboratory Medicine
School: UCSF School of Medicine
Department: Laboratory Medicine
Rank: Junior Specialist
Hours: full-time
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 – 5:00 pm (with some flexibility) plus occasional evening and weekends.

Job Description: A laboratory at the China Basin campus of UCSF is looking to appoint a Junior Specialist to conduct research related to genomic engineering and proteomics in cancer and constitutional genetics. We are particularly interested in the question of how alterations at the level of genome affect cellular phenotype at the level of the proteome. The project of interest will specifically involve the use of CRISPR genome engineering approaches to engineer DNA copy number variants – gains or losses of large segments of DNA – in normal cells. We have significant expertise in mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics and subsequent investigations involve determining how copy number variants affect cellular biological and proteomic phenotype in a variety of ways. We seek a candidate to drive forward this project and also facilitate our proteomic collaborations with other labs within and outside of UCSF. The successful applicant must be willing and eager to work closely with other lab members and collaborative faculty. A minimum two year commitment is required.

Job Responsibilities:
• Maintenance of human immortalized cell culture, DNA cloning, and qPCR screening for generation of copy number variant formation
• Use of software tools for design of sgRNA constructs
• Independent design of experiments including appropriate positive and negative controls
• Additional molecular biology techniques including protein extraction, quantification, and analysis by Western blotting
• Preparation of proteomic specimens for the described project and collaborative projects within our group and with other groups.
• Analysis of proteomic data using existing and custom software tools
• Help with shared lab duties, such as equipment maintenance, and keeping the lab clean and functional.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, or related field.

Experience: Minimum of 6 months of extensive laboratory experience as an undergraduate or in paid employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with molecular biology, DNA isolation, cloning, PCR, and cell culture are highly desirable. Prior experience with proteomics and/or bioinformatics would be strong advantages but are not required.

Additional Qualifications for the position are:
• excellent organizational and communication skills
• strong analytical abilities, problem-solving abilities, and detail oriented
• ability to maintain comprehensive laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis
• ability to work independently and assess need for assistance from supervisor

Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.

Physical Requirements: Normal physical requirements include good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination. The position requires excellent manual dexterity and familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation.
