Position description

UCSF Global Health Sciences:
Health Informatics Research and Project Coordinator position

UCSF Global Health Sciences (GHS) supports various health programs across the world, focusing on malaria and HIV/AIDS as well as other areas, mostly in resource-constrained countries. Strategic Information is an integral part of programmatic interventions, and it is critical that health information is collected at various levels in the health system with ease, while ensuring high quality data. This information must be easily accessible at the clinic, local, regional and national levels. Integrating health informatics into projects and research activities to create platforms for data collection, analysis, and reporting allows stakeholders to use and interpret the data to aide decision making, improve programs and research activities and ultimately improve health outcomes. In addition, health informatics may be able to solve problems that cannot be solved in any other way, for example tracking lab specimens between sites or tracking a continuum of care for a single patient across multiple facilities. Expanding UCSF GHS’s capacity in health informatics therefore would be of strategic importance for the medium and long-term future.

GHS is in the process of establishing a health informatics hub, with the objective to pool resources from different informatics skills (hardware, servers, software development, databases, GIS, apps, websites etc.) together in order to support GHS’ projects and research around the world. The hub will be supporting the various GHS projects across the globe (e.g. Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, and Namibia). An area of focus is the development of novel health information and mobile data collection technologies for global health.

The hub seeks a Research and Project Coordinator, with experience in health informatics and global health, to provide research, teaching and complex project management and technical support to the Global Health Sciences Informatics research programs and initiatives. The Research and Projects Coordinator will work under direct supervision of Dr. Hugh Sturrock, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics working in the Malaria Elimination Initiative and working closely with Fitti Weissglas, Senior Manager for Global Health Informatics to support and advance Global Health Sciences’ informatics programs, research and initiatives.

Job description:
The overall objective of the position is to coordinate and provide support to the implementation of selected GHS projects in malaria, HIV/AIDS, preterm birth and other areas, provide technical assistance where needed and conduct independent research. Specific key responsibilities of the position will include:
• Liaise with principal investigators, stakeholders, governments and donors as needed to establish requirements and technical specifications for selected projects and manage their implementation.
• Provide technical oversight and informatics guidance to in-country project staff attached to selected GHS projects
• Identify new technologies suitable for various projects and contribute with the establishment of a ‘technology stack’ at UCSF GHS that can be readily used for other projects as well
• Coordinate and conduct scientific research on novel health information and mobile data collection solutions for global health
• Contribute to building an informatics community within GHS
• Travel, as needed, to other countries where GHS works
• Prepare grant applications

Requirements:
• Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, global health or a similar field
• Background and experience in health informatics or related field
• At least one year of experience in developing information systems, with a focus on health information systems, in popular languages.

• Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and as a team player and meet deadlines
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work
• Solid problem-solving skills and a ‘can do’ attitude
• An interest in global health is essential, and experience or knowledge of malaria and HIV/AIDS is highly desirable
• Willingness to travel to project sites as needed
• Experience developing complex global health informatics research programs
• Fluency in written and oral English

Preferred Qualifications:
• Work and research experience in LMIC
• Knowledge of an additional language
• Demonstrable experience in working with international organizations, governments, donors and funders
• Experience with popular open-source tools currently used in Sub-Sahara Africa, including OpenMRS, ODK and DHIS2
