Position description

Department of Anesthesia, ZSFG, General Faculty Search

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at Zuckerberg San Francisco Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is seeking faculty to work as a part of a team emphasizing high quality, patient-centered perioperative care with a focus on evidence-based medicine. This is an outstanding opportunity to join an established Anesthesia Department with a national reputation of excellence in education, research, and perioperative care. UCSF has a storied history of innovation in anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine.

We are enormously proud of our tradition of excellent patient care, research, and education. Our department is committed to supporting our people through a culture and work environment that fosters well-being. We recognize that a systems approach is necessary to succeed, and we are dedicated to creating positive work and learning environments that allow all clinicians to thrive. We cultivate well-being which aligns with the strategic priorities of UCSF Health under the True North Pillar, “Our People".

UCSF seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Our department philosophy is also aligned with UCSF campus leadership in the areas of recruiting, retaining, and celebrating individuals traditionally underrepresented in the health sciences, LGBTQ+, and individuals with disabilities, to better reflect the diversity of the population we serve in the San Francisco Bay Area. We further recognize that successfully recruiting people to join our team is not the end of the story. It is also critical that we provide an environment in which all individuals in our workforce and trainee programs experience a professional, supportive, collaborative, and open environment and have the opportunity to thrive. We are dedicated to the ongoing pursuit of these goals.

Anesthesia faculty members participate as a part of a team that includes over 250 faculty members, 25 staff physicians, 68 CRNAs, 18 fellows, 84 residents, 21 academic researchers, and 178 staff members. The Department has essential roles in patient care outside of the operating rooms, with active participation in Ambulatory Care, Acute and Chronic Pain, and the Preoperative Clinic. UCSF Health encompasses five main campuses: the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion Medical Center, Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, and Benioff Children’s, Betty Irene Moore Women’s, and Bakar Cancer Hospitals at Mission Bay.

Hired candidates will become UCSF Faculty working primarily at ZSFG. ZSFG is also a safety-net hospital that provides 24-hour comprehensive emergent, urgent and non-urgent care to more than 100,000 adult and pediatric patients annually.

General clinical responsibilities for Anesthesia Faculty include a combination of providing anesthesia independently and supervising residents and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Anesthesia is provided in various locations, including 14 busy operating rooms with diverse surgical case types, and active endoscopic and interventional radiology suites. Faculty are also expected to participate on the regional, pediatric, obstetric, inpatient pain, trauma anesthesia, and preoperative clinic services.

Successful applicants will demonstrate an aptitude for and dedication to medical education and providing evidence based, high quality care in clinical teams that enhance the patient experience with a commitment to patient safety and satisfaction. Expertise and interest in the areas of trauma, regional and obstetric anesthesia, pain management, and domestic and global health equity align with the department’s focus areas. Applicants are expected to teach residents and medical students; participate in University service, faculty meetings, monthly Grand Rounds and M&M conferences; contribute to quality assurance programs and continuing education; and advance the mission of the department.
