Position description

Junior Specialist- Wilder Lab

Nature Of Research
The research laboratory of Dr. Catera Wilder in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is engaged in groundbreaking projects focused on understanding the complex signaling and gene regulation of immune defense and pro-inflammatory responses during respiratory illnesses.

Epithelium at mucosal layers, such as in the respiratory tract, are primary targets during infections due to their role as barrier cells to the environment and thus have various host defense mechanisms. The innate immune functions of lung epithelial cells and their role controlling immune cell infiltration and inflammation, an important immune response that needs to be tightly controlled to prevent immune-mediated pathogenesis, needs to be fully understood. Thus, the molecular mechanisms of innate immune cellular signaling pathways and transcriptional regulation and their impact on immune cell recruitment and activation should be investigated.

The lab is seeking to recruit a Junior Specialist with expertise in the theory of and analytic methods of biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field with experience in gene editing, next generation sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. The hire needs to have a passion about scientific research with the willingness and ability to learn, take risks, and work well with others.

The vision of the Wilder Lab is to mechanistically understand antiviral and inflammatory responses in the contexts of both health and inflammatory disease by understanding how lung epithelial cells control antiviral and inflammatory responses. This knowledge will be used to develop predictive, quantitative models of immune responses and develop cellular model systems that promote anti-viral immune responses.

Outline Of Responsibilities

  • Conduct molecular biology, biochemical, and tissue culture related experiments and analysis.
  • Utilize experimental and computational techniques involved with gene editing, cellular engineering, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis.
  • Assist with overall maintenance of the lab (i.e. ordering, stock solutions, etc.).
  • Ability to work well with other lab members on projects.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Laboratory and bioinformatics experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Proficient computer skills (Python/R, Microsoft, Adobe, etc.)
  • Motivation and independent thinking
  • Candidate’s must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
  • Candidate’s CV must state required qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.
