Position description

Goodarzi Lab – Junior Specialist – Web Lab
Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
University of California, San Francisco

The Goodarzi Lab at UCSF’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is an interdisciplinary research group focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis. We take advantage of state-of-the-art computational and experimental technologies to advance our knowledge of the post- transcriptional regulatory pathways that drive human disease.

We seek to hire a junior specialist to assist our group in carrying out experiments and lab tasks. Responsibilities include performing mammalian cell culture, assisting with molecular, quantitative, and mouse experiments, managing day-to-day lab operations, and ordering supplies. Through this work, we expect that our junior specialist will play an integral role in advancing our knowledge of cancer biology.

We are seeking at least a two-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research may be available. At the conclusion of their tenure, the successful candidate will have deep proficiency in molecular cancer biology, as well as data science.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS (or equivalent degree) in Biology or a related science (or in the process of obtaining) or at least four years of relevant research experience, and knowledge of, or experience with, basic techniques and methods required by the position.
  • Six months of lab experience in a research setting.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage time and multi-task effectively.
  • Ability to adhere to all campus safety policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience with flow cytometry, microscopy, high-throughput cloning, and/or next generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Experience with PCR and primer design.
  • Experience working with mice.
  • Basic exposure to scientific computation (i.e., Linux/Unix, Matlab, Python, Image Processing software).

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. For full consideration, please apply by the initial review date. However, this position will remain open until filled. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.
