Position description

Clinical-Scientist or Scientist – Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking clinician-scientists or scientists. UCSF has had a history of strong clinical productivity and additionally has several high-impact investigators dedicated to the clinical and/or basic sciences research specializing in areas of research such as hearing loss, head and neck cancers, sleep disorders, and voice and swallowing disorders. We have very collaborative research teams across the department and are looking to expand the breadth of our research portfolio. The preferred candidate will have a secure track record of attaining funding as a principal investigator and may also have experience supervising trainees and lab personnel.

For clinician-scientists, clinical patient care in one of the following divisions of OHNS will be expected: General Otolaryngology; Rhinology and Sinus Surgery; Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and Endocrine Surgery; Otology/Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery; Laryngology; Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Pediatric Otolaryngology; or Audiology.

In addition to the above clinical divisions, the Department of OHNS has the following research laboratories and specialties: Coleman Memorial Laboratory; Speech Neuroscience Laboratory; Epstein Laboratories; Head and Neck Cancer Research; and Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Lab.

The main research and practice location for this position will be dependent on the division, research specialty, and clinical patient care provided. Locations may include the Mission Bay, Mount Zion, Parnassus, and/or Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland campuses at the University of California, San Francisco.

Required qualifications for Scientists:
• PhD degree, MD degree, or equivalent degree with research expertise in the field or specialty of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Required qualifications for Clinician Scientists:
• MD degree, MD/PhD degree, or equivalent degree with research expertise in the field or specialty of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
• Completed accredited residency program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
• Board certified or eligible in the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Preferred qualifications for Clinician Scientists:
• Preferred applicant who has a subspecialty in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery have completed a fellowship and be board certified or eligible in the respective subspecialty.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/oct-2022-salary-scales/t5-summary.pdf. The minimum base salary range for this position is $92,100 - $360,600. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan (https://ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-670.pdf) which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
