Position description

Stroud Lab – Full Specialist
Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics
UC San Francisco

The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics is seeking a Full Specialist for the Stroud Lab. The primary area of research required for this position is the expression, purification, functional assays and structure determination of membrane transporter proteins of ABC and MFS families involved in multi-drug resistance in bacterial and fungal pathogens (e.g., Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Candida albicans). These will be studied mainly using single particle cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), X-ray crystallography and other biochemical and cellular methods as needed for their functional characterization under in-vivo and in-vitro conditions. The candidate should be well versed with various stages and methods of structure determination e.g., cryo-EM data collection (SerialEM), data processing (Relion, cryoSparc, cisTEM), model building (coot, isolde, phenix), structure validation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a PhD (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization.
  • Postdoctoral experience in developing expression and purification of membrane transporters (ABC and MFS families), cellular and biochemical characterization of proteins using various cell based assays (quantitative measure of substrate transport, minimum inhibitory concentration determination, and spot survival assay), in-vitro assays (ATPase activity measurements, thermo-stability assay, liposome-based transport assay, limited proteolysis assay), and structural determination using single particle cryo-EM.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Substantial postdoctoral experience in membrane protein function and structure analysis using cryo-EM.
  • Independence as a strong publication record.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. For full consideration, please apply by the initial review date.

See Table 24B (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/july-2022-salary-scales/t24-b.pdf) for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $83,100-$173,900.

Please apply at: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04284 with CV and contact information for one reference. Applicant materials must list current qualifications upon submission. The selected candidate must meet the qualifications at the time of application.
