Chief, Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine (OECM),
Department of Medicine at UCSF
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine (DOM) is seeking applicants to serve as Chief of its Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine (OECM). The division chief position oversees the multisite Division of OECM, which includes strong programs at UCSF Health, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Health Care System (SFVAHCS). Salary and academic appointment at UCSF will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
In addition to leading the OECM division, the division chief is expected to have a robust extramurally funded research portfolio that could be focused on investigation employing clinical, population, or bench methods. Engagement in clinical care in OECM in the faculty practice at least one of the participating UCSF sites is anticipated. Opportunities for leadership in teaching include through the division’s established OECM Residency (supported by two extramural training grants), successful CME offerings, and UCSF’s myriad graduate and post-graduate educational programs. Resources for support include University of California state funding, an endowed Chair, and SFVAHCS support, all subject to negotiation.
As one of the few OECM divisions based in a top-ranked Department of Medicine, the strength of UCSF’s Division of OECM is broad-based. This includes the fields of clinical care and consultation, as well as OECM-related epidemiology, toxicology, ergonomics, and human exposures to indoor and outdoor pollutants. Given the growing importance of climate change and its impact on health, the division will collaborate with several existing and planned climate change centers across the University of California and will be expected to grow the division’s impact in this area. Cross-disciplinary opportunities include collaboration with several entities at UCSF (including the UCSF School of Nursing OEM Nursing Program and the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies), and the UC Berkeley School of Public, which includes programs in industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and health policy. The UCSF OECM program is part of the multi-UC campus, state and NIOSH-funded Northern California Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
Applicants should be qualified for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level and have an established research program in an area relevant to the OECM division and a track record of leadership and program development. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential. Applicants must possess a terminal degree. While an MD degree and the ability to practice clinically are preferred, we will consider strong applicants with other doctoral degrees. Certification in Occupational Medicine is advantageous but not required. Additional board eligibility in another specialty, in particular Internal Medicine, is also advantageous, along with excellent clinical and communication skills.

Job Description and Accountabilities
The chief of the Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine (OECM) is responsible for leading and growing the research, clinical, and educational programs of the division, with other potential areas of expansion in the future. The chief is expected to lead in a manner that contributes to the overall success of the Department of Medicine, the School of Medicine, UCSF Health, the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS), and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG).
The chief will be held accountable to:
• Develop the academic careers of existing faculty, and support recruitment and mentoring of outstanding new faculty
• Establish a positive working relationship with division staff and create an organization known for its excellence in operations
• Identify and nurture collaborative relationships, both inside and outside UCSF, with individuals and organizations that can contribute to the mission of the division
• Build and grow outstanding research programs
• Build and grow relevant clinical services, and achieve excellent outcomes (including quality, safety, patient experience, and efficiency)
• Promote the excellence of the educational programs, particularly the OEM residency
• Strengthen and expand diversity, equity and inclusion across clinical care, research, education, hiring, and community building
• Provide leadership and mentorship to the leaders of the division’s clinical, education, and research services and functional areas to ensure effective management and a positive culture
• Promote faculty and staff engagement and satisfaction
• Continue and grow the division’s tradition of innovation and academic entrepreneurship
• Provide strong financial stewardship, including effectively managing the budget, responsibly advocating for appropriate resources, and promoting philanthropy
• Collaborate effectively with other leaders of the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, UCSF Health, SFVAHCS, ZSFG, and other DOM divisions and relevant centers and departments at UCSF and UC Berkeley.
