Position description

Computational Microbiome Researcher in the Lynch Lab at the University of California San Francisco.

The Lynch Lab at the University of California San Francisco has an opening for a Computational Microbiome Researcher to lead an exciting program of human microbiome research. We are seeking highly talented and motivated candidates with a strong research background in microbiome data analytics to join our multi-disciplinary team. The individual will lead data analysis efforts on studies primarily focused on large multi-dimensional datasets and multi-modal data analyses to identify microbial features that predict, prevent and treat chronic inflammatory diseases. These efforts are part of a vibrant translational research program that has already successfully brought a rationally designed microbial therapeutic to first-in-human clinical trials.

Candidates will be expected to work independently, be intellectually engaged in projects and be active contributors to the collaborative multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, immunologists and biostatisticians who form the Lynch Lab. The successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Susan Lynch but will work closely with intramural and extramural collaborators within and outside of the group.

Responsibilities:
• Facilitate microbiome, epigenetic and genetic data analyses for a number of human-centric microbiome studies
• Expand current multi-modal data integration approaches for aforementioned datasets
• Train lab members in data analyses
• Interact with lab members to lead and support a variety of studies
• Identify/build new data analysis tools of utility to the group
• Productively publish findings

• Desired Qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in computational/systems biology with a focus on microbiome research or a related discipline or at least five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in computational/systems biology with a focus on microbiome research or a related discipline or at least five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in computational/systems biology with a focus on microbiome research or a related discipline or at least ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Experience with data harmonization and multi-modal data analysis
• Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative research team and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues from distinct disciplines
• Ability to work independently and productively and to troubleshoot
• Superb organizational and record-keeping skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Additional Information:
• This is a full-time appointment, with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance and continuing availability of funds.
• Salary is dependent on years of post-graduate experience.
• Position will be based in the Lynch lab, within the Benioff Center for Microbiome medicine (BCMM) at the Parnassus Campus of the University of California San Francisco.
