Associate Specialist - Alvarez-Buylla Lab

The candidate will be responsible for conducting independent studies in the field of neural stem cell research with a focus in mouse brain development. The position requires a strong foundation in the field of Neuroscience. Besides standard techniques in the field (e.g. animal handling (rodents), brain tissue dissection and immunohistochemistry), the candidate should have experience conducting single-nuclei and single-cell RNAseq assays, analyzing transcriptomic data and confocal imaging. In addition, the candidate should have experience in processing samples for electron microscopy and demonstrate capacity to perform ultrastructural analysis of brain samples. The individual will also be responsible for supervising undergraduate and graduate students, maintaining protocols, and assisting the Principal Investigator in grant writing, manuscript writing and reviewing.

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Neuroscience with 10+ years of experience in neuroscience research and 3-5 years of postdoctoral experience.
• A publication record on mammalian neural development and stem cell research.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Technical skills:
o Histological processing and immunohistochemistry of mouse brain tissue
o Confocal microscopy
o Single-cell transcriptomics
o Experience in processing brain samples for electron microscopy analysis and ultrastructural characterization of brain cell types
o General cellular biology procedures including tissue culture techniques (primary cultures and established cell lines), organotypic cultures, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
• Demonstrated ability to innovate design and interpret experiments.
• Proficiency in specialized imaging software and analysis (Imaris and Fiji/ImageJ).
• Proficiency in single-cell transcriptomic software (Seurat, Scanpy, Scvelo, Monocle).
• Experience analyzing and communicating spatial data.
• Post-graduate training in field.
• Independent specialized research.
• Management experience.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
