Assistant Professional Researcher Position

Requirements Summary

Position for highly motivated Assistant Professional Researcher is available with the Program in Craniofacial Biology, and Institute for Human Genetics, at the University of California, San Francisco. Candidate will be hosted in a highly interactive, collaborative, and friendly laboratory with emphasis on mentorship and personal growth.

We study the epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of morphogenesis in development, evolution, and disease. To this end, we use genome-wide, systems-level approaches, leveraging the strengths of different organismal systems, including mouse, chick, and human embryos. A special focus is on organogenesis of the craniofacial & appendicular skeleton.

Candidate will be expected to carry out specific experiments at the laboratory bench to enable the broader mission of the lab. These studies will include basic molecular biology techniques, multi-omics approaches such as RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq on embryonic tissue samples, assistance in characterization of mouse mutant phenotypes including lineage tracing, RNAScope, imaging by confocal microscopy. These experimental approaches will require the candidate to be highly engaged and proactive in a dynamic research environment and in a highly collaborative atmosphere.

Candidate will be responsible for overall mouse colony management, monitoring cage counts and breeding schemes.

Candidate will be expected to advise and train post docs and other scientific members (e.g., collaborating faculty labs at UCSF and other institutions) on complex scientific techniques, e.g., CRISPR CAS9.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD required in genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or relevant field and postdoctoral experience following completion of the PhD, utilizing techniques or methods in developmental biology, genetics, and genomics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory practices and safety;
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact productively with lab and campus personnel;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under deadlines with general guidance;
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to accurately complete detailed work;
  • Mouse husbandry and large mouse colony management experience; and
  • Team player.

Highly Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience in genomics and next generation sequencing strongly preferred.
  • Prior hands-on experience in genomic technologies including RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq, CRISPR-Cas is highly valued and preferred.
  • Familiarity using mouse models including dissections of embryos at early gestational days and tissue collection and tissue specimen processing (preservation, cryosectioning, staining, imaging) will also be highly valued.
  • Bioinformatic skills highly desirable.
