Position description

UCSF Research Specialist Position – Phillips Lab

We seek to hire a research assistant to work with other members of our lab focused on viral protein and antibody evolution. This researcher will be involved in developing novel high-throughput methods for the evolution and biochemical/biophysical characterization of viral proteins and antibodies. Responsibilities may include generating stable cell lines and lab-adapted viruses, robotic programming, protein assay development, experimental evolution, cloning, next generation sequencing, laboratory maintenance and organization, and other duties as assigned. Applicants do not need to have prior experience in these techniques but should have an interest in learning them. It is our intention for the selected candidate to contribute meaningfully to projects, have opportunities to present their work, and co-author peer-reviewed publications.

We are interested in hiring a specialist at either the Junior or Assistant/Associate level, depending on qualifications (see below). This is a full-time position with at least a 2-year time commitment and a preferred start-date in mid-September 2022, but there is flexibility for the right candidate.

Junior specialist:
Junior specialists must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, biology, biophysics, or a related discipline. Experience working in a biochemistry or molecular biology research laboratory is a prerequisite. This would be an ideal position for a candidate seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, and evolutionary biology prior to applying to graduate school.

Assistant/Associate specialist:
Specialists at the Assistant/Associate level should possess a master’s degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, biology, biophysics, or a related discipline, or 5-10 years of experience working in a biochemistry or molecular biology research laboratory. This would be an ideal position for an experienced researcher seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, and evolutionary biology and contribute to the establishment of an exciting research program.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
