Position description

Junior Research Specialist in Fibrotic Lung Disease
University of California San Francisco (UCSF)

Our lab is focused on understanding the cellular basis of lung regeneration as the major pathway to avoid tissue fibrosis after destructive injury. This position helps champion a functional genomics approach to progressive epithelial dysplasia and fibrosis after lung injury, the latter a strong correlate of morbidity and fatality. The goal is to elucidate key, and hopefully actionable, determinants of the fate of alveolar type II (AEC2s) stem cells during injury repair (See NCB 2017 and 2022). The projects will involve establishing and analyzing multi-omic pipelines of single cell transcriptional and epigenetic data sets of human AEC2s from normal and fibrotic lungs, and epigenetic comparisons with mouse AEC2s. Signaling crosstalk between mesenchymal and epithelial neighbors as defined transcriptionally will be validated in ex vivo organoids.

The successful candidate will work with a team of dedicated scientists studying fibrosis and have the opportunity to develop further both bioinformatic and cell biology skills as a basis for future graduate school studies. Qualified candidates should have BS or equivalent degree with training and/or experience in bioinformatics (e.g. R programming) and a strong interest, preferably with lab experience, in cell and molecular biology. Prior lab experience in lung biology is not required but is a plus.

Applicants may be in process of obtaining their required degrees and/or years of experience in the relevant specialization at the time of application, however, these qualifications must be obtained by appointment start date.

Salary commensurate with the UCSF salary scale plus housing supplements.

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF03956. Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission. All qualifications must be met by time of appointment.
