Position description

Assistant Specialist – Tlsty Laboratory in the Department of Pathology, UCSF

The Assistant Specialist will work closely with current lab members, including a professional researcher, two staff research associates and a laboratory assistant, to provide technical assistance for a project related to cancer biology and more specifically chronic inflammation-associated cancers (CIACs). The overarching goal of this project is to (1) gain a better understanding of the events that drive CIACs in relationship with changes in tissue microenvironment triggered by chronic inflammation, (2) identify druggable targets predicted to prevent, stop or even reverse CIAC progression and (3) test candidate drugs that modulate these targets. The primary task will involve drug testing in in vitro cell culture models of CIAC progression designed in the Tlsty laboratory. This will involve using cultures of human primary cells. The Specialist will also participate in studies that use complementary in vivo mouse models of CIAC progression. The Specialist will develop and carry out experiments using the latest technologies in in vitro and in vivo drug discovery and drug testing. Documentation of extensive expertise in that research area is required. The Specialist will complement these approaches using molecular and biochemical techniques to further characterize and investigate the relevance of candidate targets using techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing of cell culture conditioned media and immunohistochemistry (IHC)-based testing of CIAC tissue sections. In addition, the incumbent will have the opportunity to work on in silico aspects of the projects related to latest single cell RNA transcriptomics and interact with teams specialized in CODEX-based multiplex immunohistochemistry.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use and develop their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

Required Qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Science or related majors, or must have at least five years of equivalent research experience.
• At least 5 years of experience in cancer drug testing in in vitro cell culture models and/or in vivo murine models.
• At least 5 years of experience with PDX mouse tumor models and metastasis evaluation are necessary.
• Experience with murine dosing studies.
• Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

Candidates must meet the qualifications by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior research experience in aging and behavioral studies as many aging/behavioral-associated phenotypes overlap with those seen in chronic inflammation;
• Prior research experience in immunohistochemistry, molecular/cellular biology, flow cytometry and murine cancer models;
• Knowledge in culturing primary human tissues, such as Air Liquid Interface cultures, is considered a plus;
• Histopathology analyses of mouse tumors, including image analyses and quantification;
• Knowledge for curating databases for search of antibodies optimized for IHC application;
• Knowledge in computer languages, such as R, and/or bioinformatics, is considered a plus.
