Specialist – Ou Lab, Department of Ophthalmology, UCSF
A Specialist position is available in the Ou Lab Department of Ophthalmology at the UCSF School of Medicine.
The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is a one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments and has been in the top 10 in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, currently ranking #2. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants. Research, patient care, teaching, and public service activities are at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay. The Department occupies over 60,000 of assignable square feet of space and supports 25 full-time clinical faculty, 10 basic scientists, over 50 volunteer and visiting faculty, 12 postdoctoral scholars, 15 residents, seven clinical fellows, graduate students, visiting researchers, as well as clinic and research staff for a total of 235 full time employees (FTEs).
The goal of the Ou Lab is to understand how the retina reacts in the face of injury, specifically the neurodegenerative disease glaucoma.
The specialist will help conduct research and experiments, perform scientific work, assist with collaborative projects, and ensure that the lab runs smoothly. Responsibilities will include mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, experimental support, lab organization, and management. The successful candidate will also provide technical assistance, prepare, and arrange reagents, order and inventory stock and provide a research database for animal husbandry. There will be an opportunity to write manuscripts, present data, and apply for research funding if desired, motivated and exerts extra effort. The candidate will train and mentor other lab members research skills.
The ideal candidate will be highly conscientious, hardworking, organized, responsible and self-driven, work both independently and as a team and will have familiarity with or be eager to learn molecular biology, cell biology, and imaging techniques. While animal experience is preferred, it is not required, but a desire to work with animals in the laboratory setting is required. Prior research or wet lab experience is preferred.
This is a particularly good role for individuals interested in a career in medicine or science, including those considering graduate or medical school. Mentorship is emphasized in the Ou lab and we have a strong track record of students successfully transitioning to graduate and medical school.
We are seeking a Specialist at the Junior, Assistant, or Associate rank.
Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field is preferred or must have at least four years of research experience.
Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field is preferred or must have at least 5 years of research experience.
Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s or terminal degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field is preferred or must have at least 5 to 10 years of research experience. Appointees at the Associate level should have record of academic accomplishment including published work. Additionally, appointees at the Associate level will be expected to plan and execute research with a considerable level of independence.
Applicants must meet the requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire. Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
