Junior Specialist - Jun lab
Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

The position is for a Lab Technician /Junior Specialist to assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and his team members in cancer biology research that develops patient-derived tumor spheroid chips for personalized cancer treatment. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in biology coursework as well as in wet-lab techniques, and be open to learning new methods.

Required Qualifications:
• Applicants must possess (or be in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree or must have at least four years of research experience.
• Strong background in biology, bioengineering, or biochemistry coursework and/or research.
• Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the junior specialist rank by the time of hire.
• Experience with basic wet lab research (cell culture, pipetting, transfection, plasmid transfection).
• Experience with basic engineering techniques.
• Familiar with microscope imaging analysis.
• Ability to learn more advanced wet lab techniques (immunoprecipitation, purification of histidine-tagged proteins, cell line generation).
• Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

Duties are:
• Clinical research coordination to arrange/deliver fresh cancer patient tumor samples to laboratory.
• Assess deidentified patients' medical records to correlate RECIST results with tumor spheroid chips.
• Perform research experiments under the direction and training of senior scientists.
• Perform cloning, cell culture, transfection, and cell line generation.
• Characterize cell signaling using basic molecular and cell biology techniques including western blot, FACS, immunofluorescence microscopy.
• Get trained under the direction of senior scientists for confocal microscopy, single cell perturbation microscopy.
• Responsible for presenting the research progress every 3 months.
• Lab administration, including order entry, managing chemical inventories, making sure protocols are in compliance.

This position will also provide interdisciplinary training opportunities in diverse research fields including nanotechnology, molecular biology, biophysics, and bioengineering. This will also provide learning opportunities including scientific idea conception, scientific discussion, planning and designing experiments, experimental techniques, data analysis, and written and oral presentation of the results.
