Position description

Division of Vulnerable Populations/Department of Medicine
University of California, San Francisco
Faculty Search‐Assistant or Associate Professor

The Division of Vulnerable Populations (DVP) in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) at Zuckerberg San Francisco Hospital, is recruiting a faculty member to conduct rigorous policy-oriented research related to decreasing health inequities. The incumbent should be committed to advancing the development of policies and practices that impact structural determinants of health. The Division’s current focus are in the areas of housing/homelessness and criminal justice system policies and practices. The incumbent’s work can be in those, or related fields. The incumbent should be a doctorally prepared researcher with a track record of research accomplishments commensurate with stage.

The Division includes 2 full-time MD faculty. There are 2 academic specialists, 4 post-doctoral scholars, and 52 nonacademic staff members.

The Division's current research portfolio includes investigator-initiated research studies and technical service/service grants/contracts. Funders include the National Institutes of Health, philanthropic donors, the City and State Departments of Public Health, private foundations, and multiple state and international governments. The Division is home to the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) and Amend. Funded by a generous gift from Marc and Lynne Benioff and based at the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations, BHHI aims to be a trusted source for evidence-based practice, policy, and scalable solutions—turning evidence into action to prevent and end homelessness. AMEND brings a public health and human rights lens to assessing the health and healthcare needs of people who are incarcerated with a focus on policy-oriented research.

The ideal candidates will be eligible for appointment at the Assistant Professor level, although we will consider outstanding candidates eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in innovative research and will show promise in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond UCSF. The primary responsibilities include recruiting extramural funding for research, implementation of research projects, and impactful dissemination of research findings. In addition, the candidate is expected to provide service and mentoring within the Division and larger UCSF context. The successful candidate will be committed to values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with experience and service that has prepared them to contribute to diversity and excellence at UCSF. We are keen to find candidates who will foster a creative, inclusive, and collaborative environment. Members of groups historically underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply.

UCSF seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our mission. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or terminal degree in a social or behavioral science discipline. Candidates must have at least two years of postdoctoral training or comparable experience in an area related to their research expertise.
