We apply bioinformatics, genetics, and biochemistry to discover and characterize the molecules that dictate the success or failure of phage infection. For example, we have previously identified phage-encoded anti-CRISPR proteins that inhibit diverse CRISPR-Cas systems and are currently characterizing numerous phages that evade CRISPR-Cas in other ways. We are also working on numerous new anti-phage “immune systems” encoded by bacteria. Therefore, it is expected that the candidate is highly organized and has excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate will also be expected to help in generation and maintenance of tools, and perform biochemical and molecular biology techniques in support of their own project an dothers. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, and be involved in manuscript preparation, when necessary.
