Position description

Research Specialist – Nachury Lab
University of California, San Francisco
Department of Ophthalmology

The Nachury Laboratory http://nachurylab.ucsf.edu at UCSF School of Medicine studies how the primary cilium shapes developmental and sensory signaling.

We seek one or more Research Specialists at the Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full level to join a diverse team of students and postdoctoral fellows with expertise in biochemistry, proteomics, live imaging and animal models. Past work from the lab has elucidated how signaling receptors are trafficked into and out of cilia and future work aims to bridge basic cell biology to disease mechanisms. Dysfunction of the primary cilium causes retinal degeneration, obesity, kidney malformations and skeletal anomalies. The successful candidates will leverage proteomics, imaging and animal models to understand how primary cilia regulate signaling in physiological and pathological contexts.

Past Specialists have published first author papers and gone on to graduate school, medical school, and careers in biotech.

The successful candidates will:
• Contribute technical assistance to students and postdoctoral fellows. Techniques may include but are not limited to: culture of mammalian cells, biochemical purification of protein complexes, purification of recombinant proteins, characterization of enzymatic activities, processing of cells and tissues for immunocytochemistry, fluorescence imaging of live and fixed cells and tissues and functional studies in mice.
• Conduct experiments under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator. The individual will have the opportunity to develop independence, acquire advanced technical and analytical skills and carry out their own research projects under supervision. In these roles, the Research Specialist is expected to assist in preparing figures for publications and grants and will gain authorship on publications.
• Be responsible for maintaining mammalian cells and establishing stable cell lines with endogenous tagging using CRISPR/Cas9.
• Be responsible for general lab organization including ordering supplies, organizing and maintaining inventories of stocks and reagents and adhering to safety regulations.

Required qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related Biological Science degree or must have at least four years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related Biological Science degree or must have at least five years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s or terminal degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related Biological Science degree or must have at least 5-10 years of research experience. Appointees at the Associate level should have significant record of academic accomplishment including published work, demonstrated record of University and/or public service. Additionally, appointees at the Associate level will provide considerable independence in planning and execution of research.
• Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related Biological Science degree or must have at least ten or more years of research experience. Appointees at the Full level should have significant record of academic accomplishment including published or in-press publication, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service. Additionally, appointees at the Full level will provide considerable independence in planning and execution of research.
• Efficient and organized with meticulous record keeping skills.
• Highly motivated, ability to work well independently and in a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
• Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.

Desired qualifications:
• At least 1 year of laboratory experience.
• Familiarity with basic biochemistry (SDS-PAGE, western blot), basic molecular biology (primer design, PCR) and mammalian cell culture.

Interested individuals should send their CV, Cover Letter, and contact information for two reference at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF03764. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
