Position description

Structural Biologist, Professional Researcher Series*

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an outstanding and motivated individual to join our cutting-edge research institute aimed at discovering new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. The successful incumbent will immediately contribute to our cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structural biology program focused on deciphering the structural basis for neurodegenerative diseases, including, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). The IND is building a highly focused and multidisciplinary team to discover the causes of disease, and develop effective pharmacologic treatments, cures and diagnostic markers for these diseases. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Prusiner and located at the Sandler Neurosciences Center at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus, a world-renowned hub of biomedical research and discovery.

The successful applicant will be an experienced cryo-EM structural biology researcher with expertise in determining atomic-resolution structures of protein amyloid fibrils. They will be responsible for developing and applying these methods to determine novel structures of protein macromolecules associated with human neurodegenerative diseases. Research emphasis will be on biochemical purification, performing cell-based assays and structure determination of amyloid filaments derived from complex systems including neuronal tissue and cell culture models. The incumbent will collaborate with team members across disciplines to characterize different conformations of disease-relevant proteins and be responsible for all levels of the research project.

Personal Qualifications
Required:
• Possess a high sense of responsibility for his or her own career development, as well as for the wellbeing of our organization.
• Willingness to receive training and guidance from senior investigators as well as serve as a mentor to trainees on the project.

Education and Training Qualifications:
Required:
• Ph.D. degree in Biophysics, Chemistry, or related field.
• Two-years minimum postdoctoral experience in cryo-electron microscopy.

Technical Qualifications
Required:
• Demonstrated expertise in cryo-EM including structure determination of protein macromolecules by helical reconstruction methods.
• Experience in biochemical protein purification and protein amyloid fibrilization analysis.
Preferred:
• Expertise in cryo-EM computational software including RELION, cryoSPARC and/or cisTEM.
• Experience in NMR structural methods

This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Salary is dependent upon experience.
