Position description

The Barcellos-Hoff laboratory https://barcelloshofflab.ucsf.edu/ studies radiation carcinogenesis and biologically augmented radiotherapy. We are looking for a junior/asst specialist who will work with scientist/postdoctoral fellows and staff on animal and tumorigenesis experiments. The primary duties will be to learn stereotactic intracranial surgery techniques and small animal handling including monitoring, measuring and weighing the animals. Other tasks include tissue collection and processing for flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, microscopy and other assays. The ideal candidate can take accurate notes, communicate well and follow written and oral directions. The person needs to work well independently as well as part of a team. Other tasks including running PCRs RNA isolation and other biomolecular assays. The successful candidate must be able to pass all required UCSF and departmental training and regulations.

The term of the appointment is for up to 1 year and is non-renewable at this time.

Required qualifications:

• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of relevant research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience in the relevant specialization.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
