Position description

The Jr Specialist, under the supervision of the NRG Biospecimen Bank Operations Manager, is to manage the inventory and digitization of the NRG biospecimen pathology cancer slide inventory using an Aperio Digital Scanner, and curate the catalog of pathology samples. Developing on their scientific background the incumbent will be required to interpret pathology reports to select the appropriate cancer slides to scan, use microscopy to select slides requiring histology work and to update information in the biospecimen bank database. They will also continue to receive training on the more complex procedures required form the NRG bank for supporting other Aperio related translational research projects.

Job duties include but are not limited to: selecting and pulling pathology slides, reading and interpreting pathology reports, database entry and updates, sample de-identification, preparing slides for imaging, scanning slides using a Leica Aperio AT2 scanner, performing quality control on images, annotating data into the image database, keeping data sheets up to date and providing weekly status summaries. The person will also be responsible for bi-monthly uploads of images to the sponsor, performing quality assurance prior to uploading. Specialized histology work will be performed for poor quality specimens to ensure they can be scanned. When appropriate, determined by the operations manager, the incumbent will assign scanning duties to one of the laboratory assistants. This position requires an individual who is detail oriented and who can work independently with minimal supervision. The position is 100% with flexible schedule with funding for one year.

Required qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of relevant research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).

Preferred qualifications:
• Aperio Digital Scanner experience.
• Prior independent research experience in molecular and/or cellular biology.
• Prior experience working within in a core faculty setting.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
