Harris Fishbon Distinguished Professor for Clinical Translational Research in Aging

The Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco seeks candidates to serve as the Harris Fishbon Distinguished Professor for Clinical Translational Research in Aging. We seek a geriatrician who is a national leader and mentor in geriatrics and gerontology and is a candidate for appointment as Associate Professor or Full Professor in the In Residence (Research) series in the Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, UCSF. Candidates should be ABIM certified in Geriatric Medicine and have demonstrated competence in the practice and teaching of clinical geriatrics.

Background

The Harris Fishbon Distinguished Professorship in Clinical Translational Research in Aging was established in 2009 with a $2.5 million gift to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) from the Dr. Harris M. Fishbon Fund of the Mount Zion Health Fund and the Jewish Home of San Francisco, now known as the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL). This Distinguished Professorship endowed fund is in the Division of Geriatrics of the Department of Medicine at UCSF.

The UCSF Division of Geriatrics includes 50 highly collaborative faculty across the UCSF campuses. Our vision is to optimize aging and improve well-being across the full spectrum of health and social circumstance. Our faculty are passionate about aging, research and mentoring, person-centered care, and changing the world to be a better place to age. We are looking for a candidate who shares these passions.

The SFCJL is a nine-acre campus located four miles from the UCSF Mission Bay campus. It welcomed its first residents in 1891. Its flagship role is to provide care (long-term care, short stay rehabilitation, acute psychiatric care, assisted living and memory care) for vulnerable older adults. SFCJL strives to become internationally known as a leader in scientific inquiry and learning to improve the medical and psychosocial well-being of older adults.

Description of the Professorship and Its Purpose

The Fishbon Distinguished Professor will lead the development of a clinical research program at UCSF and SFCJL that will improve the care and health of older persons through the translation of research findings to clinical benefits in people with conditions associated with aging.

The Fishbon Distinguished Professor will be a core member of the UCSF Division of Geriatrics and will participate fully in its programs, including research, education, mentoring, and collaborations with colleagues throughout UCSF. The Fishbon Distinguished Professor’s program will be administered by the UCSF Division of Geriatrics and will be located at SFCJL and the UCSF Mission Bay campus.

Support

The Fishbon Distinguished Professorship endowed fund provides annual interest payments each year. The UCSF Division of Geriatrics will also provide funding for programmatic start-up support of the Professorship. Funds may be used to support any aspect of the Fishbon Professor’s academic program, including compensation of the Fishbon Professor, other faculty, fellows or staff; start-up expenses, including relocation/moving, computer and equipment; and academic expenses, including meetings and travel. The Division of Geriatrics will provide grants management (pre-award and post-award) and assistance in the recruitment and management of UCSF personnel. The Fishbon Professor will be provided an office at the UCSF Mission Bay campus in the UCSF Division of Geriatrics to foster collaborations with UCSF colleagues.

Upon appointment in the In Residence series, the Fishbon Professor will have access to all rights and benefits of a member of the UCSF Academic Senate, including University of California loans.

SFCJL provides approximately 1,000 sf for the Fishbon Professor’s research program. The holder of the Distinguished Professorship will maintain a significant presence at SFCJL to build a premier research program that also provides opportunities for Jewish Home residents and staff to engage in cutting-edge research.
