Professional Research Epidemiologist
The Research Epidemiologist will work at 50% time with the Palefsky Research Group. The Palefsky Research Group’s focus is on the screening, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV-associated anal diseases in men and women, nationally and internationally. This position will function as the epidemiologist for the research group and work in collaboration with Dr. Palefsky and other group members to expand epidemiological research activities. The candidate will design studies, prepare grant applications, supervise clinical research coordinators in implementation of studies, analyze data, prepare abstracts and manuscripts, and present results of studies at scholarly meetings. Additionally, the Research Epidemiologist will provide mentorship to other members of the research group in epidemiological methods. The Research Epidemiologist is expected to serve as co-investigator and/or principal investigator for original research projects and to secure internal and external funding. The candidate will be the epidemiologist on ongoing studies in San Francisco, India, Latin America, and Africa, and both local and international travel will be required.
• Ph.D. in epidemiology with additional 10+ years of relevant experience in infectious disease epidemiology
• Detailed knowledge about the epidemiology of HPV, high-grade intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), anal cancer, and cervical cancer in low-income countries
• Ability to conduct complex statistical analyses of longitudinal data using SAS software and create and maintain RedCap databases
• Experience and ability to work with vulnerable populations including people living with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and men who have sex with men
• Experience and ability to work with sensitive topics including risk factors for anal cancer
• Strong written/verbal communication skills
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and function as the lead researcher for multiple projects at one time
• Track record of applying for and receiving internal and external funding as co-investigator or principal investigator
• Experience working in India, Africa, and Latin America is preferable.
• Spanish speaking would be a preferable for the Latin American studies.
• Experience teaching epidemiology would be useful in mentoring other members of the research team.
• Experience supervising students and clinical research coordinators is preferable.
• Experience with qualitative research methods is preferable.
