Position description

Bondy-Denomy Lab – Cas3 Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE - Microbiology & Immunology

Description

The Bondy-Denomy lab is seeking a Specialist at any level to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. Our lab focuses on CRISPR-Cas immune systems and their interactions with bacteriophages (see Bondy-Denomy et al., Nature 2015, Rauch et al., Cell 2017, Marino et al. Science 2018, Borges et al. Cell 2018, Mendoza et al. Nature 2020). With the support of the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley, we have recently developed a bacterial gene editing tool using the CRISPR-Cas3 system (Csorgo, Leon et al. Nature Methods 2020). We hope to add a member to our team to further the Cas3 editing potential in microbial systems, as it related to phage biology interests in the lab, and extend its functionality into mammalian cells.

The candidate will be working with the “Cas3 subgroup” in the lab to enhance the control, efficacy, and utility of large genomic deletions. This work can involve protein engineering, protein purification, bacterial strain construction, molecular cloning, bacteriophage assays, and studies of DNA repair pathways. The candidate will receive training in the above-mentioned areas. Depending on their progress, the candidate will also gain experience in mentorship and project management. The candidate will perform all routine microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including bacterial and bacteriophage manipulation, cloning, strain verification, cataloguing and management etc. An exceptional candidate will develop new ideas, be familiar with the literature, and participate in manuscript writing and publication, where appropriate. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen.

Required Qualifications:
• Degree in molecular genetics, microbiology, or related discipline.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience with high-throughput sequencing and analysis
• Prior experience in the design and assembly of DNA constructs, plasmids etc.
• Prior experience in bacterial genome manipulation (i.e. gene knockouts, locus removal, introduction of chromosomal tags and point mutations)
• Experience with molecular and microbiology techniques (including DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, bacterial transformation etc.).
• Experience in microbiology techniques (culturing, aseptic technique, plasmid manipulation, DNA/RNA extractions, protein purification)

We are seeking at least a 1-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.

Applicants must meet requirements by the time of appointment.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
