Position description

UCSF Division of Cardiology is seeking a lead for the research team in the Springer Laboratory.

This position will carry out clinical observational studies to measure vascular endothelial function and other indicators of cardiovascular health in persons who are chronically exposed to marijuana smoke. This Professional Research role will work with a clinical research coordinator to recruit research subjects and arrange their visits, conduct measurements of flow-mediated dilation (FMD), arterial stiffness, blood pressure, and ECG in research volunteers. The initial study target enrollment is 150 research subjects in two years; with the potential to expanded to 320 subjects in subsequent planned studies. Further, this role will analyze data and results, and will supervise a full-time staff researcher to carry out studies of circulating biomarkers and effects of serum from research participants on cultured endothelial cells. The Professional Research position will work with the PI, Dr. Springer, to design and implement follow-up studies and will also write grant proposals to support subsequent research.

Required Qualifications:

• Expertise and at least 2 years of practical experience measuring FMD and arterial stiffness (including experience measuring FMD in chronic tobacco and marijuana smokers), taking ECG measurements, and measuring levels of NO species in culture supernatants from endothelial cells exposed to research subject-specific serum.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Direct experience in the design of this particular project.
