The Williams lab at UCSF’s Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology opened this fall and our multidisciplinary team focuses on bacterial macro molecular communication. The Williams Lab merges, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) single molecule reconstruction, with biochemical, genetic, and in vivo studies, to address fundamental issues in the physiology of bacteria. We are seeking a research specialist at the junior, assistant, or associate level to join our team.

JOB OVERVIEW
The successful candidate will be expected to manage the day-to-day operations of the lab which includes but not limited to, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies and stocks, overseeing equipment maintenance, managing chemical inventory, keep reagents organized and ensure the adherence to safety standards and biological compliance protocols, perform general lab maintenance of laboratory stocks of DNA, protein, and bacteria strains; keep financial records; prepare stock solutions, plates, and media; monitor equipment maintenance, cleaning staff, safety training, ensuring safety compliance, and lab member performance; and perform other duties as assigned.

In addition to daily lab operation, the candidate is expected to have a strong background in the use of standard techniques of molecular biology as well as exposure to Microbiology and Structural biology and assist with setting up experiments in bacterial molecular communications. Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.

Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training. The successful candidate should be independent, work successfully within and or with several different teams and should have excellent communication skills.

Requirements

  • Junior Specialist: Bachelor of Science degree in biology or chemistry or related field or 4 years of research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist: Master’s Degree or minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Associate Specialist: Master’s Degree or 5-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be proficient at either protein purification and biochemistry or bacterial genetics.
  • Working familiarity with lab maintenance issues: i.e. ordering supplies, lab budgets, safety, and compliance issues.
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines; recognize and resolve problems while maintaining a high level of organization; diligent record keeping and detail oriented.
  • Must have strong people skills with the ability to work with diverse trainees.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with structural biology techniques (cryo EM and X-ray crystallography)
  • Experience using advanced technologies for imaging would be advantageous.
  • Ability and desire to learn new experimental approaches
