Manager of the Preclinical Therapeutics Shared Resource (PCT)
The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) is recruiting for the position of Manager of the Preclinical Therapeutics Shared Resource (PCT), a full-service fee-for-service core facility that is subsidized by the National Cancer Institute. The PCT delivers small mammal in vivo services and access to a variety of imaging technologies to members of HDFCCC (see description below). Incumbent supervises a team of five full time research staff reporting to them. The Manager will oversee multiple concurrent preclinical oncology trials undertaken in collaboration with both academic and Biotech partners on a fee-for-service basis. He/she will communicate closely with PCT clients in experimental design and planning, enable experimentation by maintaining compliant IACUC and BUA protocols, and ensure project execution in a timely and accurate manner, including report writing. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in preclinical pharmacology including the use of small molecules, biologics, and cell-based therapies, and will have experience in mouse-based human tumor models. Manager will be responsible for training and managing PCT staff in those areas. The PCT manager will work closely with and report directly to the PCT Faculty Director, and they will manage an annual budget in excess of $1M, including generation of annual or biannual institutional recharge approvals. The manager will also assist PCT clients with proposed preclinical methodologies and budgets for research grant preparation, and will contribute to peer-reviewed publications, as appropriate. In addition to PCT staff and project management, the manager will oversee multiple preclinical molecular imaging devices, ranging from precision targeted irradiation, ultrasound imaging, micro-CT, and in vivo optical and fluorescence imaging. The PCT is one of several HDFCCC core labs, and the PCT Manager will attend quarterly UCSF HDFCCC Leadership meetings.
Details of the Preclinical Therapeutics Core: PCT provides in vivo services to UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center investigators. Offering a variety of tumor engraftment-based cancer models for use in preclinical oncology trials, also works with clients on genetically-engineered cancer models. PCT provides a complete set of services that include consultation regarding experimental design, tumor cell culture and implantation in mice, administration of experimental agents, monitoring of tumor burden and response to therapy, and interpretation of study results. The PCT maintains a cryorepository of commonly used human cancer cell lines derived from multiple tumor types along with data regarding their in vivo growth characteristics. The PCT also generates and maintains a collection of patient-derived tumor xenograft models. The PCT is a resource of expertise in small animal survival surgery, and is available to provide training in these techniques on a recharge basis. Although the Core primarily functions to test experimental anti-cancer agents in vivo, it also provides animal models of human cancer for use in novel diagnostic, tumor imaging, and basic mechanistic research.
• PhD and/or MD in biomedically-relevant science.
• Post-doctoral research and evidence of scientific independence at the PhD and/or post-doc level.
• Hands on experience of mouse tumor models, preclinical therapeutics, small animal imaging and surgical techniques.
• Working knowledge of statistical analysis as it relates to pre-clinical therapeutics.
• Attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal and project management skills.
• Training or experience in pharmacology;

• Post-graduate training in field;
• Independent specialized research.
The Specialist will supervise four or more employees and is responsible for full oversight for staffing, performance management, and daily operations.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
