Assistant Specialist – Akhurst Lab

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking for an Assistant Specialist. The incumbent will be specialized in at least three of the following areas: in vivo immunology, in vivo analysis of angiogenesis, growth factor signaling pathways, general molecular and cell biology skills. The incumbent will support projects analyzing mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapies for cancer in preclinical mouse models of squamous cell carcinoma (of the skin and of the head and neck), with a focus on blockade of TGFB signaling. The incumbent will also support molecular studies on the pathologies of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia, a vascular disorder caused by mutations in genes of the TGF/BMP signaling pathways. The incumbent will manage mouse colonies for the Akhurst Lab, include mouse colony maintenance, tail tissue biopsy, gDNA preparation, genotyping by PCR and input and maintenance of mouse genotype data. Experienced in UC lab management, including assisting PI with regulatory requirements such as Biosafety, Chemical Safety, and IACUC compliance is necessary.

Required Qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or a related science and at least 12 months practical laboratory experience.
• Excellent record keeping, writing skills, and proficiency in English are required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Post-graduate training in field.
• Incumbent will also have experience in several of the following areas: mouse handling, including in vivo angiogenesis assays, microscopy, flow-cytometry, and immuno-histochemistry, tissue culture.
• Incumbent is expected to work well as part of a team and have enthusiasm for the practice of science.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
