Summary:
This is a research position in the Department of Neurology and Weill Institute of Neurosciences (Parnassus Campus) that involves the study of brain function and how diseases disrupt it, particularly epilepsy, which is one of the most common neurological disorders. Specifically, we are attempting to understand memory and cognition circuits in the brain, how to pinpoint where seizures start, and ultimately develop better treatments for these problems. You will work directly with doctors on cutting-edge technology using computer programming and data analysis, and also work with patients with epilepsy who contribute to our research studies.

Time range: This position is funded for 1 year at full-time (100% time), and possibly longer depending on additional funding availability.

Qualifications
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to computer science, statistics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or computational biology/neuroscience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency programming in Matlab or Python
  • Ability to work and interact positively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • At least some education/experience in clinical or basic science research and statistics
  • Able to work well both under guidance and independently
  • Organizational and efficiency skills including: planning and decision-making abilities to complete assigned duties in a timely manner, attention to detail, logical thinking/analytical abilities and problem solving skills
  • Enthusiasm and adaptability
  • Candidate must possess the required qualifications by the time of appointment.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of database creation and management, such as experience in RedCap, SQL server, MongoDB, or other similar platform
  • Knowledge +/- experience with signal processing analysis (such as fourier and wavelet methods)

Under the guidance and supervision of the supervisor, you will:

  • Assist in acquiring data from multiple sources including combining our existing clinical research datasets, surveys, and obtaining directly from electronic medical records.
  • Help create a single unified clinical research database with the datasets above
  • Perform data cleaning and integrity tasks: finding and correcting errors, inconsistencies, and missing data, in order to prepare data sets for statistical analysis.
  • Prepare new datasets for analysis and performing standard analyses (such as summary statistics), along with producing tables and graphs in software applications (e.g. Excel, Matlab, etc.)
  • Assist with user-interface software development
  • Occasionally work directly with people (patients) that are participating in our research studies.
  • Managing administrative items including IRB (Institutional Review Board) protocol submissions/updates, listservs, work calendars, event planning (e.g. research retreats) and conference travel arrangements.
  • Ensure confidentiality for sensitive documents (protected health information) as per institutional guidelines.
