Description

Vissers Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

Job Description:

The Vissers Lab at the Mission Bay campus of UCSF is seeking a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to conduct research related to RNA biology and stem cell regulation. This lab is built on recent discoveries that modifications on RNA, termed “epitranscriptomics,” strongly effect how RNA is processed in a cell. This highly complex system regulates many biological processes, from stem cell differentiation to cancer. We are interested in utilizing molecular biology and biochemistry to gain a better understanding of how the epitranscriptome is regulated as an individual regulatory system and in coordination with other gene regulatory systems. We aim to apply this work to elucidating and manipulating the role of the epitranscriptome in brain development and neural disorders.

We are especially interested in enthusiastic, hard-working candidates who have a background in molecular biology and research experience at the undergraduate level. Additionally, we are seeking candidates who ultimately aim to pursue a career in the biomedical sciences as either an independent researcher or in the clinical sciences. The successful applicant will work closely with the PI to learn necessary skills, and will then work in cooperation with other lab members at all levels. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, be familiar with the literature, and participate in lab meetings and discussions. The candidate will have the opportunity to present their research at local meetings (if desired) and will earn authorship on publications where they contribute data. A minimum one year commitment is required, with a strong preference for candidates who can stay for at least two years.

Dr. Vissers will work with the candidate personally to ensure individual goals are established and pursued. This includes mentorship in scientific thinking, communication skills (public speaking), networking, technical skill development, and scientific writing and figure making. We are looking for a motivated scientist to help frame the lab environment and be an integral member of the team.

Job Responsibilities:
• Maintaining cultures of cell lines and primary stem cells
• Performing molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, quantification, and analysis by gel electrophoresis or PCR
• Performing basic molecular cloning
• Organized record keeping and tracking of various cohorts of experimental groups
• Growing and maintaining yeast libraries for molecular screening approaches
• Assist in lab management and organization

Education:
• Must have (or in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Experience:
Minimum 1.5 years of laboratory experience

Applicants must meet all of the qualifications by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with molecular biology, RNA isolation, PCR, and cell culture are highly desirable.
• Previous course work in molecular biology, genetics, and stem cell biology are highly desirable.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
