Position description

Perera Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Department of Anatomy

Junior Specialist / Technician
The Perera Lab (www.rushikapereralab.com) at UC San Francisco studies mechanisms via which pancreatic cancer cells reprogram their metabolism and organelle activity, particularly autophagy and lysosome function, in order to grow. We further investigate how these processes are coordinated at the transcriptional level.
We seek a Specialist to work as part of a dynamic team exploring the cell biology of cancer cells using a combination of techniques including biochemistry, microscopy, cloning and molecular biology, proteomics, RNA-sequencing, cellular and molecular assays and transcriptional profiling in human and mouse cell lines, human primary patient samples and mouse models of pancreatic cancer. The goal is to determine how alterations in core metabolic programs enable cancer cells to adapt to cellular stress.
Exceptional candidates will have the opportunity to lead their own independent project, develop new ideas and be familiar with the literature. The specialist will be expected to help with managing day-to-day lab operations, and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen.

Required Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank or Assocaite Rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree or ten or more years of experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience with mammalian cell culture, immunofluorescence, western blotting
• Prior experience in the design and assembly of DNA constructs and molecular biology
• Prior experience in handling mice and/or mouse surgeries

We are seeking at least a 2-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.

Applicants must meet requirements by the time of appointment.
