Position description

Junior Research Specialist Position in Aydogan Lab at UCSF

We are searching for highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates interested in a junior research specialist position at UCSF Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics starting in May 2020. We perform inter-disciplinary research at the intersection of biology, biochemistry and physics/mathematics, and graduates with a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular, cellular or developmental biology, genetics or related disciplines will be considered (undergraduate degree may be in process during the application but the degree must be possessed by the appointment effective date).

The ideal candidate should have familiarity with one or more of the following techniques: microscopy, molecular cloning/biology, fly genetics (preferred but not required) and/or quantitative/computational analysis. Some lab-based research experience beyond coursework (>1 year is ideal) is required. This position is excellent for, but not exclusive to, people who would like to gain research experience and pursue further career development in academia or private sector. Our lab is new and budding, so we are most interested in candidates who want to perform independent research in addition to supporting and managing the lab. Research responsibilities would be project-dependent, and would likely include microscopy, molecular cloning and data analysis besides other specialised experiments. We are looking for a minimum two-year time commitment.

Our recent studies, showing that an autonomous clock controls the timing of centriole formation independently of the principal Cdk/cyclin cell-cycle oscillator, has challenged the long-standing model of how the cell cycle is regulated. This has opened a new avenue of research to explore such autonomous clocks in the cell. We focus on discovering timing mechanisms that regulate organelle biogenesis more generally. We use state-of-the-art techniques in live super-resolution microscopy, combined with genetics, biochemistry, biophysics and mathematical modelling, to address such biological phenomena.
