Position description

Department of Orofacial Sciences
Goodwin Lab

I am looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join my lab focused on understanding the biology underlying craniofacial anomalies, in particular clefting of the secondary palate and disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), utilizing mouse models. I am a junior faculty member and have a small group, and the applicant will be working closely with me to move multiple projects in the lab forward. The applicant needs to work independently, however, we have students and volunteers joining the lab, and we are a part of shared lab space in the UCSF Program in Craniofacial Biology, and so the applicant will also need to be welcoming and willing to train new lab members and interact with a diverse group of individuals in the larger floor community. Background in biology and previous lab experience are preferred. Also, excellent organizational and management skills appreciated. Applicant will engage in lab meetings and other UCSF seminars and have opportunities to present in group meetings.

Responsibilities include:
• 20% time: managing mouse colony, genotyping, making lab solutions and reagents, and ordering supplies.
• 80% time: collecting mouse samples, sectioning, in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, microscopy, organ culture, live imaging, and molecular techniques.

Required qualifications:
• Must have (or in process of obtaining) a BA/BS degree in cell/molecular biology or related sciences or at least four years of research experience
• Must be willing to work with mice and mouse samples
• Basic understanding of genetics and molecular biology
• Excellent organization skill and attention to detail
• Excellent time and task management skills
• Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) in English
• Proficiency with software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
• Willingness to learn new software programs such as Avizo, Landmark, Fiji, and ZEN
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Ability to work independently
• Good problem solving skills

Preferred qualifications:
• Prior experience in a research laboratory
• Prior experience in mouse handling and genotyping
• Prior experience in general and advanced molecular biology techniques
• Knowledge of UCSF policies and procedures

Applicant must have all requirements met by time of hire and applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.
