Goga Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

Job Description:
The Goga Lab at the Parnassus campus of UCSF is looking to appoint a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to conduct research related to molecular pathogenesis of liver cancer. We have identified MYC as a major driver gene in aggressive forms of liver cancer. We seek to study the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic reprogramming in MYC driven liver cancer and/or other oncogene driven pathways of metabolic reprogramming in liver cancer. In addition, we are interested in utilizing our understanding of the molecular and metabolic pathways involved in liver cancer to optimize treatment regimens for this disease.

We are most interested in talented, motivated, enthusiastic candidates who have strong scientific expertise in cancer and metabolism and communication (written and verbal) skills and want to ultimately perform independent research. Candidates should be detail-oriented and possess excellent organization and analytical skills. The successful applicant must be willing and eager to work closely with graduate students and other post-doctoral fellows and other lab members. A minimum 6-month commitment is required.

Job Responsibilities:

• Microscopy analysis of cell number and viability.
• Performing basic statistical analysis and bioinformatics (ie Kaplan-meier’s curves, comparison between treatment groups, etc).
• Experience with whole genome CRISPR screens preferred
• Breeding of transgenic mouse models, including animal handling and genotyping.
• Surgery for implantation of tumor chunks into mice.
• Handling of mice for measuring tumor size or providing treatment either by oral gavage or injections.
• Processing mouse tissues for immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent staining, and analysis by flow cytometry.
• Maintaining cultures of primary tumor cells and cell lines.
• Performing molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, quantification, and analysis by gel electrophoresis or PCR.
• Performing basic molecular cloning.
• Organized record keeping and tracking of various cohorts of experimental groups.
• Help with shared lab duties, such as equipment maintenance, and keeping the lab clean and functional.

  • Must have (or in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
  • Must have (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
  • Must have (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Minimum 2 years of laboratory employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with molecular biology, DNA isolation, cloning, PCR, animal care and handling, and flow cytometry are highly desirable. Previous course work in liver cancer models and studies of metabolism is highly desirable. Familiarity with Excel, Prism, and FlowJo are highly desirable.

Additional Qualifications for the position are:
• excellent organizational and communication skills
• strong analytical abilities, problem-solving abilities, and detail oriented
• ability to maintain comprehensive laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis
