Description

Junior Specialist (Panagiotakos Lab)

The Panagiotakos Lab, located in the Regeneration Medicine building (Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research) at the UCSF Parnassus campus, is seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in conducting basic science research with translational relevance in developmental neurobiology. This part-time position will involve working closely with the PI and other members of the laboratory to understand how calcium signaling and electrical activity regulate different aspects of neuronal differentiation in normal development and in the context of psychiatric disease.

The chief responsibilities for this position include performing histological staining and tissue processing, molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture, and/or mouse in vivo experiments under the supervision of the PI and a senior member of the lab. There will be potential to develop and execute an independent project, depending on the interests of the individual. A majority of the candidate’s time is expected to be dedicated to research, but the position will also involve a significant amount of time assisting in lab organization and maintenance. Responsibilities will include mouse breeding, ordering supplies and reagents, updating lab protocols, stocking and maintaining supplies, and requesting equipment maintenance when needed.

This position is for one year (with the possibility of more) and is suitable for an individual with a developmental biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and/or pre-medical background who is looking to gain research experience before pursuing further career development, such as graduate, medical, or MD/PhD training.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research and professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.

Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree). Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) by the start date of the position, expected to be in July 2019. We would prefer some experience in biomedical research in a laboratory setting, and preference will be given to candidates with experience in mouse handling and husbandry, mouse surgical techniques, sterile tissue culture, histology, fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology (qPCR, sequencing, molecular cloning), biochemistry (western blot, IP), flow cytometry, or familiarity with imaging software, Matlab, and MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint software. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills are important. Candidates should be detail-oriented and capable of developing independent working habits.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
