Director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology

The Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, in conjunction with the UCSF Department of Microbiology & Immunology, seeks to recruit a director with strong leadership capabilities and a robust basic research program. We invite applications from scientists with M.D., Ph.D., or M.D/Ph.D. degrees who are established leaders with expertise in the immune system and its intersection with pathogens and other microbes, autoimmune pathways, or inflammation, with the potential to reprogram the immune system to tackle human disease.

The Gladstone Institutes is a renowned center of scientific excellence focused on applying basic science to mechanistically understand the basis of human disease and reveal new therapeutic approaches. Gladstone is highly collaborative and closely affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and located in the rapidly expanding Mission Bay area. Our science contributes to the health and well-being of all people through research, education, and outreach in the areas of virology and immunology, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disease enabled by advances in data science and technology development.

Candidates may be at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and would be affiliated with appropriate UCSF graduate programs. Leadership philosophies emphasizing vision, humility, service and mentoring will be prioritized in order to effectively integrate with the culture of Gladstone and UCSF. The candidate will have an opportunity to lead recruitment of 3-4 faculty, forming a team of 8 laboratories. Synergistic opportunities for new innovative approaches with ongoing research activities within Gladstone are highly desirable.
