Description

Research technician position in liver regeneration and transplantation

The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research and the Department of Surgery/Division of Transplant Surgery at the University of California San Francisco are seeking to fill a unique position involving basic research on liver regeneration in the laboratory of Holger Willenbring (Schaub, Nature 2018; Rezvani, Cell Stem Cell 2016) and participation in a clinical trial of ex vivo liver perfusion led by Garrett Roll (NCT02522871).

Responsibilities in the laboratory include monitoring, ordering and stocking of supplies, maintenance of equipment, breeding and genotyping of transgenic mice and rats, and contribution to research projects using human pluripotent stem cells, humanized mice and adenoassociated viral vectors. As part of the clinical trial, the incumbent will be trained in normothermic perfusion of human livers and participate in up to 3 patient enrollments per month. These enrollments are unscheduled, can occur at night or on the weekend, involve small airplane travel to a donor hospital, engagement with the deceased donor organ procurement team, and monitoring of the liver perfusion device during transportation and in the operating room, leading to 12-18-hour shifts. Applicants with an interest in organ transplantation and preservation would benefit the most from the infrequent but labor-intensive clinical trial experience.

Minimum qualifications for the position are a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related discipline with 2 years of (undergraduate) laboratory experience, proficiency in standard molecular and cell biology techniques, effective oral and written communication, good organizational and interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, proficiency with Mac and PC platforms, ability to multitask in a deadline-oriented environment. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.

To apply for the position, please submit a cover letter, CV and contact information of 3 references online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF02517.
