The Chou Lab at UCSF’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is a new interdisciplinary research group focused on biological research at the interface of structural biology, microbiology, and pathogenesis. We are seeking a specialist at the junior level to join our group. We strive to build a collaborative team that is rooted in equity, scientific rigor, and open access. This position would be an ideal opportunity for highly motivated individuals with a long-term interest in research and potential goal of attending a research-intensive graduate program. The available research position will allow one to expand their experimental skillset in molecular biology and biochemistry while learning how to drive an independent research project. Excellent communication and organization skills a must.

JOB OVERVIEW
Manage day-to-day lab operation: Perform general lab duties including but not restricted to: preparation of stock solutions, plates, and media; equipment maintenance; cleaning of glassware.

Assist in molecular biology and microbiology research. We seek a candidate with basic experience in molecular techniques (DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, cloning, DNA/protein quantification, DNA and SDS PAGE electrophoresis, Western blot analysis). Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in recombinant protein expression and purification techniques, including FPLC instrumentation experience. In addition to being able to independently drive a research project, we are seeking an individual with superior organization skills to streamline lab operations by assisting with other major research projects in the lab.

We are seeking at least a 1.5-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available. This position is ideal for someone seeking research experience towards the pursuit of graduate school or medical school.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

Requirements
• A B.S. or B.A. (or in process) with at least one year (part-time) research experience biochemistry lab
• Experience with recombinant protein expression and automated protein purification
• Must have strong people skills with the ability to work with diverse trainees.
• Highly organized and detail oriented.

Preferred Skills
• Ability and desire to learn new experimental approaches
