Position description

The Fung lab focuses on understanding how chromosomes segregate during meiosis. We use a combination of high-throughput sequencing and chemical screening techniques as well as in vivo microscopy, molecular biology and genetics to study problems related to meiosis and infertility. We work with yeast and occasionally work with patient data. In addition, we use quantitative methods to analyze data, including deep learning and custom programming approaches (Python, R). The applicant would be responsible for learning all these techniques under the supervision of a postdoc or staff scientist and apply them to a number of ongoing projects. The applicant will be required to gain expertise in a number of lab methods, be responsible for general lab safety and organization. The applicant is expected to keep good lab notebooks, report to the supervisor minimally weekly and learn to be relatively independent. The applicant is expected to attend lab meetings and present results. You also may have to mentor undergraduates who come to the lab.

Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a bachelor’s degree in a biological or physical science or at least 2 years of wet bench experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank must possess a master’s degree in a biological or physical science (or equivalent) or at least five years of research experience.
  • Ability to think computationally and perhaps learn a computer language is preferred.
  • Also preferred is someone who would like to stay at least 2 years.
  • Previous lab experience is preferred however we have trained many people without lab experience.
  • Good eyesight is a bonus since some yeast dissection will be performed.
  • Candidates must meet the requirements by the time of appointment.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
