Assistant University Librarian for Archives and Special Collections and UCSF Archivist

The UCSF Library is a world-class facility that provides access to the world’s health sciences knowledge base, offers a wide variety of informal learning spaces, and provides innovative educational technology services to the UCSF community. We are currently seeking to fill the position of Assistant University Librarian for Archives and Special Collections and UCSF Archivist (AUL for A&SC).

Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL for A&SC provides leadership, vision, strategic direction, and administration of the UCSF Library A&SC department, including the Industry Documents Library. As a member of the Library Leadership Team, the AUL for A&SC participates in planning, policy formation, and decision-making related to health sciences library services, collections, and technologies. In this context, the AUL for A&SC strategically aligns collections, services, programs, and outreach with the broader library and university missions. The AUL for A&SC fosters a flexible, collaborative work environment and applies expertise and creativity in the development of world-class archives and special collections in a variety of formats.

The AUL for A&SC supervises 6.8 FTE of professional archivists and specialists, and 0.2 FTE of assistants, as well as interns and volunteers.

Required Qualifications
• Graduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. history, archival administration, public history, or related field) or equivalent education and training.
• Minimum of five years of developing and administering archives or special collections within a major research library or comparable organization.
• Must have a minimum of three years direct supervision of librarians.
• Knowledge and understanding of current practices, key issues, and trends in archives and special collections, including digital strategies; knowledge of the rare book trade.
• Significant record of teaching, scholarship, and/or professional service.
• Experience with budget planning and administration, human resources management, and facilities and space planning.

Preferred Qualifications
• Graduate degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.
• Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
• Experience with health sciences archives or special collections.
• Experience working with library donors and large gifts, and with university development and alumni offices.

This position is a full-time academic appointment.
