Medical Director of Community-Based Palliative Care Services

The University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine is recruiting a full-time palliative care physician to join the Division of Hospital Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). ZSFG is a premier safety-net hospital and trauma center run in partnership by the city of San Francisco and UCSF since 1873 and serves as one of the main clinical sites for the UCSF School of Medicine, which includes robust fellowship programs in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

The Medical Director of Community-Based Palliative Care Services (MDCBPC) will work in concert with current program leaders to strategically expand community-based palliative care services throughout the San Francisco Health Network. This position will include protected time for strategic planning and program development, in addition to outpatient clinical work. The MDCBPC will provide clinical coverage in both a supervisory capacity, with our nurse practitioner, and through direct patient care with our interdisciplinary community-based palliative care team. This team provides expert symptom management, advance care planning, connection with community resources, and psychosocial and spiritual support for patients with serious illness. Opportunities for additional clinical work will expand as community-based services are developed in other settings and offered to additional patient populations.

Successful candidates will have outstanding clinical, teaching, and organizational skills as well as an interest in program development. A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex academic and public health environment such as ours. Our division highly values physicians who will make a contribution to diversity of the ZSFG physician workforce, and whose background and experience will contribute to our mission of providing high-quality care for the diverse patient population served by ZSFG. Interest and experience in the care of underserved populations is highly preferred. Candidates must be board-eligible or board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Positions include a faculty appointment at the University of California San Francisco, flexible schedule, and competitive benefits package.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
