Junior Specialist (Pollen Lab)

The Pollen Lab, located in the Stem Cell building (Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research) at the UCSF Parnassus campus, is seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in conducting basic science research with a focus on studying the development and evolution of the human brain. This full-time position will involve working closely with the PI and a postdoc in the laboratory to understand molecular and physiological features distinguishing cell types of the human cerebral cortex.

The chief responsibilities will include bioinformatic and statistical analyses, pluripotent stem cell culture, and cerebral organoid differentiation. This position is for one or two years and suitable for an individual with computational experience who is looking to gain research experience on the way to further career development, such as going on to graduate, medical, or MD/PhD training.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree).

Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills are important. Candidates should have a quantitative background with coursework in statistics, machine learning, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology. Required skills: Programming experience; informatics skills with large genomics datasets. Preferred skills: Laboratory experience in neuroscience.
