This is a position in a highly dynamic research lab with primary focus on studying basic biology of human embryonic stem cells. We are looking for an individual with extensive knowledge in human stem cell biology, molecular biology techniques, and advanced cell culture experience. The Specialist must have experience in maintaining cultures of human stem cell lines, preferably embryonic, and have exquisite aseptic technique. The candidate will also perform other related duties. Strong organizational skills and immaculate record keeping are required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Power Point and Microsoft Excel are required.
Required qualifications include:
Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization. Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization. Excellent knowledge of and proficiency in aseptic technique is required. Knowledge of cell culture systems in which different substrates/media are employed. Being able to perform standard cell culture related assays including viability, growth curves, preparing cells for FACS and performing immunohistochemistry is a must. Proficiency with standard analytical lab methodologies (e.g, Western blotting, PCR). Computer proficiency including MS Office, Photoshop, photomicrography packages; ability to learn instrumentation software. Ability to work independently and in teams consisting of members with different degrees of knowledge or ability. Fine motor skills. Good oral and written communication skills in English. Good organizational skills. Knowledge of cellular physiology as related to biochemical pathways, growth requirements for cells in vitro, and cellular responses to varying conditions (e.g., different oxygen tensions). Knowledge of immunocytochemistry and other antibody-based techniques; light and fluorescence microscopy. Experience with preparing cell for FACS analysis. 2+ years of experience in working with human embryonic stem cells, including their maintenance, characterization and banking.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Culturing, propagating, and banking human embryonic stem cells
- Experience/working knowledge of deriving new ESC lines.
- Post-graduate training in field.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
