Position description

Mukherjee Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Hooper Foundation

Description

The candidate will be responsible for laboratory research duties as well as lab management duties. This position will involve experiments including bacterial culture, mammalian cell culture, macrophage infections, microscopy, molecular biology, gene expression analysis, mammalian cell transfections, immunoprecipitations, protein gels, Western blotting; and perform other duties such as lab ordering/organization. The specialist will perform experiments with the bacterial pathogen Legionella pneumophila. General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position, and other duties as assigned. In addition independent research projects are available separate from the above describe duties. The Mukherjee lab is a highly collaborative space that is pushing the cutting edge of host-pathogen biology. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen.

Required Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) either a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of research experience for appointment to the Assistant rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Associate rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience with handling pathogenic microbes, aseptic techniques
• Prior experience in the design and assembly of DNA constructs

We are seeking at least a 2-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.
